APEC’s Policy Partnership on Science, Technology and Innovation (PPSTI) envisions that the APEC region will have achieved innovative economic growth by 2025. (PPSTI Strategic Plan 2016-2025)

The PPSTI’s mission is to “support the development of science and technology cooperation as well as effective science, technology, and innovation policy recommendations in APEC through collaboration between government, academia, private sector and other APEC fora.”

The Partnership was formed in 2012, when APEC agreed to broaden the mandate of the Industrial Science and Technology Working Group (ISTWG) to include in its discussions innovation policy development and to intensify cooperation among governments, businesses and academia. The ISTWG was renamed to the PPSTI, and a new terms of reference outlining the PPSTI’s mandate and goals was endorsed.

PPSTI held two meetings in Peru in 2016 – the summary records can be found here, and here.

In addition, the Partnership supports a range of cutting-edge APEC projects.

Events and Collaboration

PPSTI has enjoyed cross-fora collaboration with the Economic Committee and Human Resources Development Working Group and has forged new connections with ABAC and the International Association of Science Parks. PPSTI 7 held an Innovation Policy Sharing Seminar on “Promoting Entrepreneurship for Quality Growth” featuring public, private and academic presentations, while PPSTI 8 held an APEC Research and Technology side-event on the SDGs and Climate Change. PPSTI 8 also presented the ASPIRE Prize for 2016 and finalized the group’s responses to its 2015 Independent Assessment.

The Internet of Vehicles

The Internet of Vehicles (IOV) is an integrated computer network supporting intelligent traffic management, dynamic information service and vehicle control. Through improvements to the design of vehicles and the application of intelligent transport systems, challenges related to automobile transportation in the increasingly urbanized Asia-Pacific region can be met: accidents can be minimized, vehicle emissions reduced and increasing road congestion can be managed.

The Internet of Vehicles is a multi-year project; it promotes cooperative innovation and capacity building for developing economies regarding the broad and efficient use of mobile connectivity in intelligent transport systems.

The next installment of the project will take place on 14 - 16 September 2017 in Shanghai:  Mobile & Mobility Connectivity (MMC) 2017: 4th APEC Internet of Vehicles (IOV) Symposium.
